Once upon a Time......

In 1983 Richard stallmen started the GNU project.His idea was to make an operating system which is free and can be modified and used.The name of "GNU"is a recursive acronym for"GNU`s Not Unix".

And Also He Wanted this GNU is a Unix-Like operating system which is a collection of applications ,tools,libraries and programs to interact with 
hardware called as "kernel".
"HURD" is the GNU`s own kernel but it was not that much popular.

In 90 Decade .......

In those Days MS-DOS is the Only operating System which is feasible to buy normal people.Because Apple OS and UNIX Really Expensive in those days.And also Most of the time UNIX operating system had used for large scale computer systems.

At the Same time period MINIX was a another Operating System which was made by Prof.Andrew s tanenbaum

to teach UNIX in schools.It was 8086  architecture based  operating System.Eventhough Minix`s source code was available,the Distribution Licence did not permit changes and modifications.

Linus Torvalds......

In 1991, Linus Torvalds was a second year student at the University of Helsinki in Finland.This University had used Minix for 

their teaching program.

He also had been using 

it.

Then he began  to write his own kernel.He started it by writing device drivers and

hard drive access for his computer.

At these time he had connected to a newsgroup which is used by minix related users called comp.os.minix .He just put those ideas
within that group he got lots of reviews.

LINUX.........

In 1991 September he had a basic Design of it 

and he called it as Version 0.01.

It was called as Linux and afterwards 

it combined with GNU system for make a 

complete free Operating system.After that Linux 

has developed as a fully free 

and fully functional operating system.

NOW...........

Linux is now very fast ,stable, scalable Operating System.It is using from your 

mobile Device to supercomputers.
